Phil Ball RIP
January 11th, 2012
Today Facebook kinda proved its worth, today we remembered one of the best loved characters from our scene in Cardiff. A lot of the people who came together virtually to remember, I don’t see that often so it was nice to know we all are on the same page for a couple of thoughts today. Phil Ball aka DJ Risk was part of the first wave of DJ’s gathered together for Aperture (a drum & bass night I ran in the city for a while), he was probably the loudest most obnoxious DJ in the city, but what made him most loved is that everything he stood for and everything he said was wired straight from his heart. Me and him had a few run in’s, close to fighting on more than one occasion, but the incidence were never remembered the next day. He was one of those people who couldn’t get out of fifth gear, he wouldn’t change down and had not much room for compromise. One of the most vivd memories I have, is swapping his set time to a slot that required a mellower tempo, so as not to upstage the main act or make the night peak to early, did he? Fuck No, just gave me a wry smile that said “I told you not to change my set time”. Three years bro, seems like yesterday, Miss you.
